Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology for Sabahan Students
KOTA KINABALU: An aerospace training course in North Borneo University College (NBUC) is expected to commence in December this year. The first intake for the Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (with licensing) will involve 50 students from across Sabah. President of NBUC, Prof Mohaizi Mohammad said the course will take one and half years on campus, followed by a year of practical training on maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) as well as for licensing on Category A, with MASwings.“We already have aerospace or aircraft training centre here. But, mostly didn’t offer it with licence, meaning graduates cannot work directly right after they completed their course. With this course, NBUC is positive that graduates are able to cater to the market demand, locally and internationally. I believe there are plenty of jobs in the aviation industry,” he said. Prof Sr Dr Mohaizi Mohamad revealed this latest development after the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing between regional carrier MASwings and NBUC here on Thursday.
He is also positive that Indonesia’s plan to move its capital to Kalimantan will increase aviation demand. “The programme will start once the Malaysia Board of Technologist (MBOT) approves it. This MoA is part of the procedure,” he said following the approval, the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) will also come in to help students with education funding. “Students must at least get credit in Math, Science and English (in SPM) to take up the course,” he said adding that the overall programme costs about RM45,000.
Meanwhile, MASwing Chief Executive Officer, Aminuddin Zakaria, said that the programme is expected to help Sabah grow its aerospace industry and strengthen Kota Kinabalu as a regional aviation hub. “This education collaboration is to strengthen, promote and develop academic co-operation, which will benefit the nation in the future. By having our own Aviation MRO Regional Centre here, we are confident that we can grow bigger and stronger in the industry. It is always our aim to extend our expertise and knowledge towards the development of human capital,” he said.
